The famous boulder appeared in the late 1800's to early 1900's in the Ohio River. It would pop up every decade or so when the river was low. Prominent citizens scratched their names on the rock. There is an image of a sort of smiling face on the rock that has sparked considerable interest over the years. Some believe this is an ancient Indian hieroglyph.
