Built by H. S. Grimes, it was a famous building in Portsmouth as it was the first "flat" building, meaning the roof was void of any irregularities.(Portsmouth Daily Times, July 27, 1907) It had 43 rooms and was rented by the Y.W.C.A. in 1912. It became Grimes Apartments from 1922 to 1966 when it was razed for the expansion of Ohio University Portsmouth Branch, later Shawnee Community College. The Hotel Washington, at 500 Second (2nd) Street, was known for its beautiful entrance way. In about 1980 it became part of the Riverview Retirement Center along with the Biggs House. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 dollars to Portsmouth to build a library because Henry Lorberg contacted him. It was located at 1220 Gallia Street and is still in operation today. The Turley Building housed the First National Bank from 1906 to 1911 and the Checker Store from 1952 to 1973. Leslie Turley constructed it in 1905 on Chillicothe at the northeast corner of Second (2nd) Street. In 1992 it was razed for the expansion of Shawnee State University.
