Title A name given to the resource Carnegie Building (Public Library) Turley Building Subject The topic of the resource The Carnegie Building was the first public library in Portsmouth. Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 dollars to Portsmouth to build a library because Henry Lorberg contacted him. It was located at 1220 Gallia Street and is still in operation today. The Turley Building housed the First National Bank from 1906 to 1911 and the Checker Store from 1952 to 1973. Leslie Turley constructed it in 1905 on Chillicothe at the northeast corner of Second (2nd) Street. In 1992 it was razed for the expansion of Shawnee State University.
