The 40-foot monument was dedicated in 1879 in honor of local soldiers killed in the early days of the Civil War. Sergeant John Barnes of Company G, portrayed on the top, was the first man from Scioto County killed in the Civil War. A photograph of Sergeant Barnes was sent to the sculptor, and those who knew Barnes prior to his death said the granite likeness was very good.
