                <text>Worn hardback green leather diary of Robert Alexander Bryan with strap enclosing gold image on flap with lettering "Diary 1866".  It has lined pages and handwritten entries inside. Robert was born in 1839 in Adams County, then relocated to Scioto County and became an engineer and surveyor. He was the Scioto County Engineer from 1866-1869, 1880-1885, and then again in 1900, the County Surveyor in 1872, and the City Civil Engineer from 1880-1893. Robert is credited for many engineering projects in Scioto County including bridging the Scioto River at its mouth, overseeing the construction of the Scioto Valley Railway for 16 miles from Portsmouth, creating the 1889 map that hangs at the court house and library, and organizing the first street paving in Portsmouth in 1891. He died in 1913.</text>
