In 1870, the city of Portsmouth purchased this two story brick house from Thomas Dugan for $5,000.00 for use as the City Hospital. It was located on what was then called Chillicothe-Pike (Scioto Trail). Four years later the building became a children's home. In 1907 it was re-opened as Hempstead Hospital. After a third floor and two wings were added in 1923, the building looked much different. The name was changed to Portsmouth General Hospital in 1925, and Scioto Memorial Hospital in 1964 until the new hospital was built on Twenty-Seventh (27th) Street. This building was razed in 2006. In February of 1870, the city opened a hospital called City Hospital in this building. It was located on three acres of ground on the west side of what was then called Chillicothe Pike (Scioto Trail). Four years later the hospital was turned into a Children's Home. In 1907, the City Council decided to re-open the City Hospital but changed the name to Hempstead Hospital named for Dr. Giles Hempstead. The addition of a third floor and two wings in 1923 greatly changed the appearance. The name was changed to Portsmouth General Hospital in 1925, and Scioto Memorial in 1964. This building was razed in 2006.
