Roy Liston was born in Wamsleyville in 1877 and for more than 50 years, he taught instrumental music in southern Ohio schools.(obituary, November 19, 1956) On April 6, 1937, the Portsmouth Times noted that he was the supervisor of music in the county schools.

The congregation had built its original building at this location in 1875 when the First Presbyterian congregation expanded. This building of "Humellstown brownstone" was dedicated December 3, 1911 at the same location.
