Glasses with round lens set in gold wire frames from Dr. James Kelso. Dr. Kelso was born in 1886 and died in 1979 at the age of 93. In 1922 he began practice as a chiropractor and optometrist at 4002 Gallia Street in New Boston. He retired in May of 1978. (from his obituary August 20, 1979 in the Portsmouth Times).
Metal button with hanging small gold colored metal bell, commemorating the Portsmouth Sesquicentennial celebration June 5 - 12, 1965. On December 29, 1814 the Ohio legislature passed an act to incorporate the town of Portsmouth in Scioto County. This act took effect March 1, 1815.
Pair of lady's wooden shoe heels covered with black celluloid in manufacturer's box. The box top information: style: 568, size: 6, height: 15, type: cube, cover: dull celluloid, top: leather. A guarantee is on the side of the box: "The Ambassador Wood Heels contained in this carton are guaranteed to be free from all defects in material and workmanship. Each pair is carefully inspected to insure our highest standard of quality." The 1921 Sanborn Fire Map of Portsmouth shows at the southwest corner of Jefferson and Fourth (4th) Streets: "Vulcan Last Co., Wood Heel Plant"
Original currency of the First National Bank of Portsmouth; national currency; five dollar denomination; slight wear and fading; beige in color, dated February 5, 1903. The 1904 Portsmouth City Directory lists The First National Bank at 127 Market Street, officers: J.W. Bannon, Pres., A.M. Damarin, Vice-Pres., and Simon Labold, Cashier. The bank was organized in 1863, serial charter number 68.
Metal shoe button hook engraved, "Bihl Brothers, Phone Sciotoville 993, Wheelersburg, Ohio." "Central Shoes" on reverse side. In 1930, Bihl Bros. placed small ads for candy, meats, poultry, etc. in the Portsmouth Times. The 1930 census lists truck farmers named Bihl residing in Porter Township.
Metal pick type opener for pressed cardboard milk bottle caps, both sides advertise "The American Steam Laundry, Phone 176." The 1928 Portsmouth City Directory lists the American Steam Laundry Co. at 10 Glover Street, President Perley Ives.
Metal shoe button hook engraved "Anderson Bros. Portsmouth, Ohio" with no engraving on reverse side. George W. Anderson operated several shoe, clothing, and dry goods businesses from 1874 until his death in 1895. His son, William, established the Anderson Department Store at the corner of Third (3rd) and Chillicothe Streets from approximately 1900 - 1932. Sears Roebuck Department Store was later located at the site.
Metal shoe button hook engraved "Hall Bros. Portsmouth, Ohio." "Made in U.S.A., pat. apd. for" on reverse. In the 1914 Portsmouth City Directory, Charles S and Rigdon Hall were "outfitters to men and boys" located in the Masonic Temple Building at the corner of Chillicothe and Fourth (4th) Streets.
Metal pick type opener for pressed cardboard lids on milk bottles, engraved "Pure Milk Co. Portsmouth, Ohio." "Pasteurized Milk, Cream & Skimmed Milk" on reverse. The 1920 Portsmouth City Directory lists Pure Milk Co. at the northeast corner Clay and Gallia Streets, Louis P Cranston, Manager.
Steel cigar box opener and bottle lid opener stamped "Ohio Valley Wholesale Co." on one side. The hatchet end was used to slit label and tax stamp, pry the nail out of a cigar box lid, then pound the lid shut. The 1922 Portsmouth City Directory lists The Ohio Valley Wholesale Co., G L McMahon, Pres., T F Stanton, Sec., I E McMahon, Treas., at 737-739 Fifth (5th) Street. Cigars, Cigarettes, Tobaccos, Smokers' Articles and Sundries.
