John Cook organized Company K of the 56th O.V.I.and was it's Captain. He was wounded at Champion Hill and had his leg amputated immediately and died only 6 days later.

Landed in Alexandria on a flatboat; later coming to Portsmouth. Was a wagon maker by trade, and he built the first coach in Portsmouth to travel to Piketon and back.

Joshua V. Robinson came to Portsmouth in 1829, and he was instrumental in building the Scioto and Hocking Valley Railroad. Robinson Avenue is named for him.
