Colorized photo image of the Young Women's Christian Association building at 902 Second (2nd) Street. The forty-three room Grimes Hotel was built by H. S. Grimes in 1907 at the corner of Second (2nd) and Gay Streets. The Y.W.C.A. rented it in 1912 for their use. It became Grimes Apartments from about 1922 to 1966 when it was razed for the expansion of Ohio University Portsmouth Branch (now Shawnee)
Colorized photo image of the Indian (Head) Rock in the Ohio River. A note printed on the back: "To be seen only during extreme low water." Prominent citizens scratched names and initials on the rock. One image seems to be a smiling face. Some believed this was an ancient Indian hieroglyph.
Black and white photo image with faint pink background of Soldiers' Monument in Tracy Park at Ninth (9th) and Chillicothe Streets. The 40-foot monument was dedicated in 1879 in honor of local soldiers killed in the early days of the Civil War. Sergeant John Barnes of Company G, portrayed on the top, was the first man from Scioto County killed in the Civil War. A photograph of Sergeant Barnes was sent to the sculptor, and those who knew Barnes prior to his death said the granite likeness was very good.
Color photo of the new Greenup Dam Level & Locks dedicated July 21, 1962 on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River 14 miles east of Portsmouth, Ohio. The dam has nine gates each 100 feet wide and 37 feet high. The main lock chamber 110 x 1200 feet with 32 feet lift. The Dam length is 1250 feet.
