Photo image of scanned scrapbook page. Pictured is a black and white photograph of Martin Beebe Gilbert. He was born in New York in 1816. He came to Portsmouth with his family in 1830. His father, Giles Gilbert, was in the grocery business as well as the steamboat parts trade. Martin organized and began the M. B. Gilbert Grocery Company located in Second (2nd) Street. A fire destroyed the building in 1910, and the business was moved further down Second (2nd) street.
Photo image of scanned scrapbook page. Pictured is a newspaper advertisement for the M & G Gilbert Grocery Store. The business was started by M. B. Gilbert in 1832 at 167 West Front Street. The wholesale grocery business moved to several different locations in the next 100 years.
Photo image of scanned scrapbook page. Pictured is a Confederate Ten Dollar Bill and a black and white photo of Honorable Henry A. Towne. Henry was born in New York in 1826. After attending Marietta College for law and graduating in 1845, Towne taught for several years. He was admitted to the bar in Cincinnati in 1849. Towne lived in Marietta after this. After a few law partnerships, his company relocated to Portsmouth in 1855. Following this move, Henry held many offices and even got elected to the position of Scioto County Auditor in 1871.
