Colorized image of the Grimes Hotel, 902 Second (2nd) Street, "Portsmouth's first flat building" according to the Portsmouth Daily Times of July 27, 1907. Built by H S Grimes at the corner of Second (2nd) and Gay Streets, it had forty-three rooms. In 1912 the Y.W.C.A. rented it for their home. It was Grimes Apartments from about 1922 to 1966 when it was razed for the expansion of Ohio University Portsmouth Branch (now Shawnee)
Colored photo image of the Biggs House on the southwest corner of Front and Market Streets. The United States Hotel was constructed on this site in 1831, but was destroyed by fire in 1860. The Taylor House replaced it, but also burned in 1871. The larger Biggs House was built on the site and opened in 1872. It was a grand hotel from 1872 until the early 1900's. The Union Mission purchased the Biggs in 1931 and it served as a shelter for transient men for many years. The Scioto Memorial Hospital acquired the hotel in 1978 and it was renovated at apartments for the elderly known as the Riverview Retirement Center, which also includes the re-modeled Washington House.
Colorized image of the Turley Building located at the corner of 2nd (Second) and Chillicothe Streets. The Turley Building was built in 1905 by Lelsie Turley. In 1906 the First National Bank and several other businesses were located there. It held the Checker Store from 1952 through 1973. It was razed in 1992 for the expansion of Shawnee State University.
Gold colored metal medallion showing a horse and rider on one side and a native American good luck symbol on the reverse. Forrest and A. Grave Williams, brothers, started the Excelsior Manufacturing Company at Pig Iron Corner in Portsmouth, Ohio around the turn of the century. Excelsior became the manufacturer of "The Original 'Boy Scout' Shoe for Boys". The medallions — considered the first United States Scout medallions — were issued between July 1910, and January 1914. The original group of medallions are dated July 1910, while subsequent issues omit all reference to date.
