The 1899 Portsmouth City Directory listing: Portsmouth Brewing & Ice Co., president & treasurer J. Esselborn, secretary Oscar Knorr, brewers lager beer and ice manufacturer. 258, 260, 262, & 264 West Second (2nd) Street. In 1914 Mr. Esselborn was still president & treasurer, George Zeisler was secretary at 224-230 Second (2nd), phone # 94.

An article about the Portsmouth Brewing and Ice Company from the Portsmouth Times, dated March 31, 1894, talks about "the malt house, bottling rooms, and stables on the opposite side of Second (2nd) Street, occupy a lot of 50 x 110 feet."

Julius Esselborn purchased the brewery in 1889. His son, (Paul) Julius Esselborn was the head of Portsmouth Brewing & Ice Co. from 1899 to 1920, succeeding his father at his death (1900) as the brewery’s president
