Colored image of Y.W.C.A. building at 902 Second (2nd) Street. The fourty-three room Grimes Hotel was built by H. S. Grimes in 1907 a the corner of Second (2nd) and Gay Streets. In 1912 the Y.W.C.A. rented it. It was the Grimes Apartments from about 1922 to 1966 when it was razed for the expansion of Ohio University Portsmouth Branch, now Shawnee.
Looking on Chillicothe Street. Notable buildings: The National Bank Building was located at southeast corner of Chillicothe and Gallia Streets. Wolf Men's Clothing Store was located at 320 Chillicothe Street. Hotel Hurth was located on Chillicothe Street on the southeast corner of Third (3rd).
Black & white photo of the C P & V railroad freight depot at the corner of Waller and Tenth (10th) Streets, on the north side of the tracks on the east side of Waller. The Cincinnati, Portsmouth, and Virginia Railroad later became the Norfolk and Western.
Black & white photo of the large Spanish gun from the defeated Spanish war ship the "Admiral Oquendo," captured in July of 1898. The gun was being moved to Cincinnati as a trophy of the Spanish War. The Portsmouth Daily Times reported the gun weighed about 14 tons and was over 18 feet long. (April 25, 1899)
