Coin token good for 10 cents issued by Burton's Exchange in 1862. On November 26, 1859 this ad appeared in the Portsmouth Times: "Burton's Exchange, formerly Hotel St. Charles, East Side Market Space, Portsmouth, Ohio. H.D. Burton will be found at the above place, ready to serve his friends and the public with Meals, on call; Oysters, Fish, Birds, Venison, Sardines, &c. FRESH OYSTERS having made arrangements to be supplied with Fresh Oysters, direct from Baltimore, I can supply dealers, parties, and families as cheap as any house west of Baltimore."

Black and White Photo Image of the Burt & Hall Clothing building at Chillicothe & Third (3rd) Streets, horse and buggies on the street. This building held various businesses and organizations before 1922 when Lewis Furniture moved in. From about 2012 to 2016 the Elite Institute of Cosmetics was located here. Shawnee State University acquired the building in 2017.

The Burgess Steel and Iron Works was incorporated in 1872, and it was located on the river at end of Third (3rd) Street. This factory burned in 1898 and Levi York re-built in New Boston in 1898-1899.
The Standard Telephone Manufacturing Company was located at 1021-1025 Gallia Street. It was later changed to the Standard Supply Company and specialized in electrical supplies manufacturing.

Images shown: Burgess Steel Bird's Eye View drawing and a photograph taken after the fire that destroyed Burgess on June 7th, 1898. It had covered seven acres at the end of Third (3rd) Street near the Ohio River. The officers were Levi D. York-president/general manager, J. E. Jones-vice-president, B. F. Vincent-secretary/treasurer. After this fire, Mr. York built a steel mill in New Boston
