The Esplanade, or Government Square, or Gallia Square, as it was called in the 1800's is located at the corner of Gallia and Chillicothe Streets. In 1959, during a special ceremony, the name was changed to the Roy Rogers Esplanade.

The July 16, 1935 Portsmouth Times announced that Williams Manufacturing Company had purchased the Excelsior Shoe Company building at Gallia Street and Campbell Avenue for $75,000.00. This was another step in the liquidation of the Excelsior Shoe Company.
