In about 1900 a well-known butcher named Thomas B. Blake purchased the property and developed five store rooms in the block facing Gallia Street at the corner of Lawson.

Opened in 1908, named for Dr. Giles S.B.Hempstead, it was enlarged with a third floor and two wings in 1923. This building at 2001 Scioto Trail became the Portsmouth General Hospital in 1925. It was razed in 2006 after the new hospital was built on 27th Street.
