Photo image of scanned scrapbook page. Pictured is a black and white photograph of Martin Beebe Gilbert. He was born in New York in 1816. He came to Portsmouth with his family in 1830. His father, Giles Gilbert, was in the grocery business as well as the steamboat parts trade. Martin organized and began the M. B. Gilbert Grocery Company located in Second (2nd) Street. A fire destroyed the building in 1910, and the business was moved further down Second (2nd) street.
