It also had a barber shop, a pressing room and a restaurant. Since 1982 the building has served as senior citizen apartments.

It was opened in 1914 and became Portsmouth's first integrated elementary because of overcrowding at the Washington School in 1953. The building was razed in 2003 and the SOMC Cancer Center was built on the site.
