Full-Time Local History Supervisor

The library is accepting applications for a full-time Local History Supervisor scheduled to work 40 hours per week at the Portsmouth location. This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree and is responsible for providing assistance to patrons with genealogy and local history research; performs research through
correspondence; conducts in-house and outreach programming; maintains department files and indexes departmental resources. This position also supervises staff workflow and is responsible for the scheduling.

Starting rate is $20.33 hourly plus benefits!

Summary: Under the supervision of the Director, the Local History Supervisor manages the operations and staff of the Local History department, with the primary responsibility of serving patrons with their genealogy and history queries. This position oversees development and maintenance of department resources including digitization of materials for the library website and Pinterest. Also requires planning and presenting programs for in‑house patrons and community organizations and groups.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum two years’ supervisory experience
  • Work experience with local history and genealogy resources; significant experience in public service
  • The ability to meet scheduled hours with rare absences; includes evenings and weekends
  • Driver’s License, car insurance, and access to reliable transportation / vehicle
  • Commitment to excellence in customer service and representing the library in a positive manner
  • Exceptional communication skills; both verbally and in writing
  • The ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite and use new software and technology

Essential Functions

  • Instruct and guide patrons through classes, both on-site and off-site, with research (online and offline)
  • Participates in interviewing and selecting Local History and other library staff
  • Direct workflow and supervise staff including scheduling, training, and evaluating
  • Work with local organizations and collectors to assist in research and preservation of historical items
  • Organize department resources for functionality and appearance
  • Speak to local organizations and present programming in-house and off-site
  • Prepare flyers, brochures, handouts, and press releases for website and for the Marketing Manager

  • The ability to learn and implement current and emerging technologies

  • Update job‑related knowledge and skills through continuing education workshops, webinars, conferences and staff development activities

Physical Requirements

  • Considerable manual dexterity for use of keyboard and standard office equipment
  • Requires ability to manipulate library materials, such as books, magazines, and DVDs
  • Requires a combination of sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, and some driving
  • Requires regularly lifting items weighing up to fifty pounds; sometimes loading and unloading materials
  • Abilities of reaching, bending, climbing, and twisting
  • The ability to push full book carts for considerable distances
  • Some outdoor activity; majority of time in climate-controlled environment. Regularly required to talk and/or hear within normal ranges
  • The ability to respond to alarms and communicate safety information to patrons and staff
  • Visual acuity for sustained use of computer monitor
